The Power and the Gory was originally designed as a board game
in 1987. It is a war strategy game based on world war II land and air
battles. Although there is simplicity in the design, and
the design
was gradually improved since that time, it is important
to note that
very careful attention was paid to color psychology
and the
integration of the piece design into a coordinated set in size and
appearance.
The intent was to create a game where strategy would prevail
over
chance elements during the course of the game. Shorter
games
of this variety tend to have luck as the overriding factor while many
of the longer war games are at the extreme end of length game
play and complexity.
Some individuals who have taken the time to play this
game have lost
all track of time and have played for 8 to 12 hours
or more in the
first sitting while intending to play for only an
hour or two. The game
has been condensed and shortened considerably since that time
to the minimum size where strategy will determine the winner.
Although the game may appear to be innocuous this is somewhat
deceiving and for many but not all persons that play, it has a tendency
to grow over time. With the Power and the Gory as a board game
some individuals become possessive and attached to the game
pieces.
The Power and the Gory was produced as a video game
in December 1995 on the Atari ST TOS platform. In any way that
video games are classed the lines blur between them, most games
contain elements of each other within them to a larger or lesser
extent. The Power and the Gory is a combination of a god game
and strategy game with a poker element in the air battles as
a kicker.
The manual includes computer instructions, complete rules to the
game, strategy tips, rules charts, diagrams and a quick
reference chart. The artificial intelligence is powerful and
comprehensive with constantly changing and evolving patterns
of attack and defense at both tactical and strategic levels.
